The barricades at Liberty Park, the original site of the OWS protests, have been removed. It’s been almost two months since the eviction on Nov. 15, and the city responded to a complaint by the NY Civil Liberties Union that the barricades violated the requirement that such public spaces provide access to the public.
If it was India, or Saudi Arabia, or Bahrain, such a public space would be destroyed, and our movement subject to arbitrary restrictions. But I am grateful to God that we live in a nation of laws, because this is the triumph of the American judicial system. If the police or Mayor Bloomberg had their way, we would forever be barricaded outside the park; but when George Washington refused the crown offered by Congress, he replied “The law shall be king.”
I’m headed downtown right now to do a victory jig.
Update: What I look like after a victory jig.
