Ratko Mladic says all Serbs must share guilt
From The Observer.
|‘I am not a killer. But the people who killed, they should be held responsible.’ Mladic continued to be arrogant and demanding, insisting not only on his own innocence but on the shared guilt of all of the Serbian people. He said: ‘You elected [Slobodan] Milosevic, not me. You are all guilty, not me.’|
He’s right about that. All people face equal guilt in the face of human rights atrocities. It’s too chilling to share, but General Mladic’s entry into the Srebrenica safe area was videotaped, and filmed as giving out candy and bunny rabbits to the blond Bosnian children, playfully pinching one 8-year old boy on the cheek. Thousands of men and boys were systematically slaughtered, as the UN watched helplessly.
Except for the victims, humanity is to blame for this atrocity. There is nothing so pure in us as to be exempt from the human proclivities to commit violence on any scale. Human rights abuses are not only lessons for the region they occur in, but are reminders of our collective failings into the future.
